A Decade of Cultivation: A Citation Context Literature Review of Connected Learning Research

Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The Connected Learning framework was introduced in 2013 with the online publication of a report, Connected Learning: An Agenda for Research and Design, which advocated for research and design focusing on equitable, interest-based, and new-media-supported youth learning. A second report from the Connected Learning Research Network was published in 2020 “reflect[ing] on a decade of engaged scholarship.” In the 10 years between these publications, the original report has been cited over 820 times in academic manuscripts. We conducted a citation context literature review of those 820+ publications. This review allowed us to consider the contribution of the Connected Learning framework based on its uptake and interpretation in subsequent scholarship. We report on findings addressing theory, design, and equity.
