Philosophical Theorizing in the Global Then and Now: Text, Biography, and Culture

Abstract

Aligned with the theme of the 2018 American Educational Studies Association Conference theme “Dare We Build a New Global Order?” this proposal attempts to answer the following question: what kind of philosophical theorizing might help us analyze then transform our atrocious global time/space into a time/space of humanity? To do so, I draw from John Dewey’s scholarly writings as compiled in the 38 volumes of The Collected Works of John Dewey, 1882-1953 edited by Jo Ann Boydston and published by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (Boydston, 2008) to tease a persistent scholarly “misunderstanding” of John Dewey’s intellectual legacy and cultural project. I argue here that our philosophical theorizing in the global should consider seriously the gestalt of democracy, power, materiality, and complexity, as it should be documentary, stemming from and going back into the biographical and cultural moment of both the philosopher and the cultural space/time of philosophizing.
