Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel explores the concept of “white emotionality” as it is playing out in the passage of various educational policies throughout the United States. (e.g., anti-CRT bills, “Don’t Say Gay”). The first presentation examines the current internal debate between Evangelical Christians and Christian progressives about CRT, sin, American exceptionalism, and the education of our youth. The second presentation explores the teaching of whiteness and white emotionality at a predominantly white institution of higher education. The third presentation examines the racist history and current movement toward privatization of schools under the guise of "choice." The last presentation uses the “Don’t Say Gay” bill recently passed in Florida to explore the ways in which sex education curricula serve as sites of contest in the current culture wars.
