Multiple Presenter Session: Alternative Session
Teachers are tired. They are trauma stewards, the blame of society, and those who still help raise our nation’s children. It is complex, gut-wrenching work. In an effort to support teachers, especially those in their early career, we have worked to build a university-sponsored support group to help the very deserving, but often overlooked, early-career teacher. Through this support group, we bring together recent graduates each month to talk, build community, support teacher projects, and create community art. One of these art projects, “Teaching in the Doldrums,” helps reveal the deep challenge our teachers face. Like “The Doldrums” in The Phantom Tollbooth, the current educational landscape requires teachers to become mindless, joyless beings that simply exist to follow rules. Through analyzing and disseminating the art created by early career teachers, we hope to better understand their souls.
