The Relation of Philosophy to Theology Reconsidered

Abstract

This session will review the classical contours of the philosophy and theology debate in Judaism and present some important contemporary proposals to address the debate.

The panel includes a paper by Seeskin which represents the Maimonidean and then Kantian challenge.

Novak then reviews the issues and presents his position on the pluses of a phenomenological approach.

Kepnes then reviews hermeneutic and post-liberal approaches and argues for the advantages of a liturgical theology.

Rashkover is chair and will offer a brief response in the end of the session
