This book panel will center on Chloe Thurston’s “At the Boundaries of Homeownership: Credit, Discrimination, and the American State.” This book represents a major contribution to the study of race, income inequality, and the American welfare state. Thurston’s book peels back the layers of homeownership to reveal the interworking’s of federal government policies. In addition, “At the Boundaries of Homeownership” provides powerful case studies of boundary groups challenging access to federal programs on grounds of racial, gender and income discrimination. Through organizing and activism, these boundary groups transformed laws and private practices governing determinations of credit-worthiness.
Thurston’s book breaks new ground in political science and speaks to new frontiers in the study of urban politics, statebuilidng, and racial capitalism.
