The papers in this panel invite us to reconceptualize the Russian state and better understand the logic of contemporary state-building in the country using original empirical evidence in policy arenas related to immigration/migration, courts, and domestic violence policy. Papers focus on the importance of emotion, legitimacy, informal politics, gender politics, and state-regional relations, and illuminate the politics of contemporary authoritarian legitimation strategies in Russia.
