The Presence of the Past - Roundtable

Sat, September 12, 2:00 to 3:30pm MDT (2:00 to 3:30pm MDT), TBA

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Session Description

Here are the questions addressed in the recently published edited volume (The Presence of the Past: Essays on Memory, Conflict and Reconciliation, Academica Press, Washington-London, 2019, Martin Palous and Glenn Hughes, editors) to be discussed at the proposed roundtable:
What role does memory play in our public discourse? What should be remembered and what should be allowed to sink into oblivion? Memory can feed conflicts and “legitimize” them. But it also can serve as a path towards reconciliation. The contributors to "The Presence of the Past: Essays on Memory, Conflict and Reconciliation" -- a majority of them Cubans -- confront the problem of memory, conflict and reconciliation in the context of their own life experiences. They articulate different perspectives and invite us to engage in a dialogue on the role of memory in the current political discourse.
