Session Submission Type: Pre-conference Short Course Full Day
This half-day class consists of 5 sessions.. Starting at 7 a.m. PST, the first 50 minutes will be a background lecture on event data: their history, common sources, and known problems. From 8:00-9:20 PST, students will learn how to access Twitter, create a developer account, create an application for research approval, and how to get data. From 9:30-10:50 PST, students will learn to work with Twitter data, using data provided for the course. From 11:00-12:20 PST, three methods for identifying events will be discussed. This session and the one before it will involve programming. A break will occur for lunch from 12:20-13:00 PST. The final session, from 13:00-13:50, will discuss other online sources of event data; hardware requirements; using images; and tips to avoid common pitfalls. Professor Steinert-Threlkeld will then be available from 14:00-14:30 for any questions.
