It is not uncommon for states to forward deploy military forces into the territory of allies and partner states to deter rivals and more rapidly respond to crisis. But do these forces succeed in deterring aggression? This paper utilizes cross-national panel data on beyond-border troop deployments to observe the effects of forward deployment on the occurrence of militarized disputes targeting the sender or recipient states.
