This paper focuses on women executives who have come to power as prime ministers and presidents. Using comparative analysis and a women’s political empowerment framework, we analyze women’s paths, powers, and impacts in office. How do women gain political footholds in presidential and prime ministerial positions in Central and Eastern Europe? What role does gender play as women pursue the highest positions of power and as they govern once in office? What do women’s ascensions in governance suggest regarding women’s political empowerment for leaders themselves and for the women and girls in their societies?
