Latinas Getting Sterilized: Gendered Negotiations with Romantic Partners

Abstract

Little is known about Hispanics and their contraceptive choices. This presentation is based on interview and survey data from 29 Hispanic women who were sterilized at a public clinic in southeast Texas with the Essure device, which entails a new outpatient sterilization procedure. We find that most women discussed sterilization with their intimate partners multiple times, but had more decision-making power in the relationship regarding female, but not male, sterilization.
