About Annual Meeting
Previous research has established the importance of spiritual experiences for addiction recovery and service to others. This paper is one of the first to examine the relationships among the experience of divine love, service to others, and sobriety among adolescents who have participated in treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) dependence, with the 12-Steps as an adjunct therapy. We seek to better measure the “active ingredient” in spiritual experience, which should improve the effect size relative to previous studies that have employed more general measures. Participants included 195 adolescents with substance dependency court-referred to residential treatment (52% female, 30% minority, aged 14-18). Implications of findings are discussed.
