Leisure Travel and Subjective Well-Being of Older Adults in China

Sat, August 22, 8:30 to 9:30am, TBA

Abstract

While considerable research has been conducted on leisure activities, very little work has considered the relationship between leisure travel and subjective well-being among the elderly. Using data from the 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, we examine leisure travel and its association with subjective well-being of the older adult Chinese population. We use feelings of uselessness, feelings of stressfulness, and life satisfaction to measure subjective well-being. Results show that leisure travel is positively associated with subjective well-being. Specifically, leisure travel significantly alleviates feelings of uselessness and stressfulness, and increases life satisfaction.
