About Annual Meeting
A new pattern of global migration is that of skilled or educated people moving from developed to developing countries in search of work. In this qualitative research study, I interviewed 41 non-Chinese international professors teaching in China. The aim of the study was to understand the factors that led to their decision to work in the mainland. My analysis indicates that professors with doctorates or terminal master’s degrees decided to teach in China for the following reasons: as a last resort, for career advancement and opportunities, or for adventure and excitement. I found that these primary reasons stemmed from the fact that there were different kinds of international professors interested in teaching abroad. Findings from this study shed light on the changing patterns of global migration, as well as a different class of migrants seeking relocation.
