About Annual Meeting
Although many previous studies pointed out that workplace relations is a big factor related to reasons for young people to leave companies, details are not known as to what is the real problem in workplace relations. In this study, survey respondents, their superiors and workplace were classified into two types in terms of interpersonal relations: bonding and bridging types, and the relations between these types and the turnover intentions and work consciousness of young people were analyzed. Then, the effects of various combinations of these two types of the respondents, superiors and workplace on turnover intentions among young people were also examined. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted for 1,000 young workers living in four metropolitan prefectures and the results were analyzed with the focus on the relations between the interpersonal types and turnover intentions. It was found that bonding-oriented young people were more concerned about workplace relations, mismatch with the types of workplace or superiors did not make much differences on turnover intentions and job satisfaction among bridging type young people but made a great influence on bonding type young people. These results indicate the need to consider the types of employees, superiors and workplace and their combinations and the importance of providing assistance to young people and their superiors for the formation and maintenance of interpersonal relations in order to prevent young people from leaving their job early.
