Abstract

This paper investigates the difficulties inherent in long-range transportation forecasting. Despite the clear difficulties it poses to practitioners, long-range forecasting will be required to inform megaprojects, particularly in the field of transportation. The paper then investigates a particular facet of the “sharing economy,” namely car-sharing. The general implications of car-sharing at the regional level are discussed, along with a specific case of how transportation modelers attempt to account for car-sharing in long-range transportation forecasts.
