Suspended Attitudes: School Suspensions and their Relationship to Adolescent Well-being

Sun, August 12, 2:30 to 3:30pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon H

Abstract

Suspensions might negatively affect students’ attitudes about school, suggesting the practice produces unintended social and psychological consequences that school policies can fail to consider. Using longitudinal middle school administrative and survey data, I find that students who are suspended are socially and psychologically vulnerable prior to their removal from school and suspensions likely further harm their sense of school community and identification with the work of school. I close by discussing how these consequences of suspension policies might add to the disadvantages vulnerable students experience in school and later in life.
