About Annual Meeting
Using theories of stigma and self presentation which argue that individuals tend to manage stigma through highlighting other positive or powerful aspects of self and situation this paper explores the case of self presentation by women in the Instagram body positivity community. My analysis demonstrates that these women present a vulnerable self by drawing attention to physical “flaws” including “fat,” scars, acne, and menstruation as well as mental and emotional struggles including eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. These women are able to maintain this presentation of self through the positive reinforcement of the body positivity community which espouses inclusivity and rejects censorship. By acknowledging vulnerability rather than relying on other positive aspects these women transform stigma.
