Session Submission Type: Paper Session 100min
The dynamics that perpetuate educational inequalities are a central focus of sociological inquiry and an important target of educational policy. Understanding these dynamics requires attending to local policy implementation as well as how policies are developed and legitimized in the context of unequal power and competing political, cultural, and racial ideologies. In this session, the papers examine the unintended consequences of educational policies designed to challenge inequality, study how race shapes the distribution of educational resources across schools, analyze the public’s perception of the legitimacy of educational stakeholders in the policy process, and identify the conditions under which the gap between researchers and practitioners is bridged. This session will provide new insights into key educational policy debates and inform future directions for sociological research in this area.
