In the years following Time magazine’s 2014 declaration that the US had reached a “transgender tipping point,” the nation has witnessed the simultaneous increased visibility and inclusion of trans people and increased violence and discrimination against trans communities. Despite its advancements in understandings of sex, gender, sexuality, medicine, and social movements, the discipline of sociology is infrequently called upon to contribute to national discourse on the US trans population. This presidential panel features scholar-activists in sociology and activists in the national transgender rights movement to discuss how to advance transgender justice in and through sociology. Panelists will articulate the sociological insights and expertise that could add to the national conversation on transgender rights and to support the national movement for trans justice. They will also speak to the urgent need to look “in house” at the ways in which the discipline can better include, represent, and support trans-identified scholars and the subfield of trans studies. The panel will close with a Q&A session with the audience.
