4161 - Uncovering the Ordinary: Everyday Mechanisms of Racism and Resistance

Tue, August 13, 8:30 to 10:10am, Sheraton New York, Floor: Third Floor, Liberty 3

Session Submission Type: Paper Session 100min

Description

Sociologists of race and ethnicity generally regard racism as a patently structural system responsible for the production of an asymmetrical system of white privilege that pervades every aspect of civil society, shapes social interactions and affects lived experiences. While a vast body of work has documented and explicated the nature of racism and inequality; the precepts and contradictions of racialized belief systems; and the dynamics of intergroup cooperation, and competition; growing attention has been devoted to better understanding how ordinary behaviors, feelings, beliefs, and practices – generated by that structure -- collectively normalize, maintain and reproduce racial hierarchy. Panelists will discuss an exciting array of papers examining such ordinary activities as touring a brewery, placing a rental ad on Craigslist, paying a municipal fine, being detained by police or describing your vote for Trump as a non-racist act, can be inflected by racial discourses, ideologies and norms that both reproduce and resist the existing racial order.
