Before and After the Bell: New York City Graduation Rates and Neighborhood Contexts

Sun, August 9, 10:00 to 11:00am, TBA

Abstract

Students who graduate high school tend to have higher self-esteem, more financial success, and lead safer lives than their peers who do not. Graduate rates can be influenced by many different factors, including the culture and policies within the school. This research aims to evaluate the effects of these in-school features and well as community level variables on graduation rate. The study concludes that school factors such as attendance and safety as well as neighborhood factors aligning with social, service, physical, governance, and socioeconomic domains, significantly impact graduation rates in New York City high schools.
