How Multiplex Contexts can Predict Group Participation using Position Generator Data from the 2018 GSS

Sun, August 9, 2:00 to 3:30pm, TBA

Abstract

This paper, using 2018 data from the General Social Survey, seeks to answer the question what is the social network basis for group participation these days in the US? I take advantage of the 2018 GSS Social Network Module, specifically the “position generator” instrument to explore the relationship between an individual’s close social ties and their commitment to social life as measured by time devoted to volunteerism, participation in groups and organization for sports, hobbies and other leisure interests, and participation in political parties and events.
Specifically, I examine three hypotheses:
1. Social closure/multiplexity as measured by the number of close ties should be a better predictor than weak ties of the generation of social engagement as measured by volunteerism, group participation in sports, hobbies and other leisure interests, participation in political parties and events
2. Contrary to much of the literature on the benefits of social closure, close ties will have a smaller role in shaping people’s sense of mental, physical and personal well-being relative to more directly material influences such as financial means
3. Though close ties likely influence political participation, their influence on political views should be indeterminant since social ties in and of themselves cannot predict the content of one’s views.
