Transnational Communities and Global Lenses

Sat, August 8, 8:00 to 9:30am, TBA

Abstract

Transnational communities are located within and across national boundaries. The lives and ties of their members are dispersed across transnational landscapes. Therefore, it is vital to explore and analyze their lives from transnational /global perspectives. By drawing on data from a sociological research project, this paper examines the lives of Bhutanese communities who are engaged in social and cultural transnational practices. By employing a global framework, this paper focuses on two main issues. First, it examines the roots and ties of Bhutanese communities in multiple locations and how they maintain these relationships and connections across nations. Second, it analyzes how they actively channel /use their social capital to build new communities in a new world.
