Nepalese society grapples with patriarchal ideologies, caste hierarchies and discrimination, particularly impacting women, especially in the hospitality sector like Dohori (duet) restaurants. Women workers experience exploitation, mistreatment, and harassment, perpetuated by societal attitudes resulting in discrimination and double marginalization. Most young women come from rural, indigenous communities in Nepal and migrate for work to escape poverty, conflict, and gender-based violence. Social exclusion persisted due to pervasive negative perceptions and stigmatization associated with their occupations. Entering the sector, they face violence and exploitation and exposed to high-risk working and living conditions. These women have no entitlements and fall out of any form of universal health coverage.
This qualitative study aimed to explore the work environment and its impact on the lives of women working in the hospitality sector in Kathmandu. I examine the challenges faced by women workers migrating from villages due to poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. The study highlights the unrecognized nature of women's work, leading to multifaceted challenges, violence, and discrimination from family, society, and the state, including low wages and precarious conditions, coupled with inadequate protection, putting their wellbeing at risk.
Significantly, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive examination of the status and experiences of women workers in hospitality businesses, particularly in duet restaurants in Nepal. I conducted an investigation into the working conditions, as well as the occurrences of violence and exploitation of women workers. This study examining these gaps through the life stories of 15 women workers, exploring into their past experiences, current situations, and future aspirations. Utilizing a qualitative research design combining descriptive, exploratory, and analytical approaches, the study facilitates generalization encompassing personal and professional challenges.
