Introduction: Research on how age, race, ethnicity, and geography shape diabetes care remain limited, especially at the local level in the United States. This study examines these factors among adults aged 50 and older in Newport News and Isle of Wight counties, Virginia,
Methods: Data were collected through an online and in-person survey distributed via social media, primary ambulatory clinics, and independent pharmacies, with 60 participants aged 50 and older.
Results: Findings show significant differences in healthcare access and quality between African American, Hispanics compared to non-Hispanic White residents. Non-Hispanic White and native English speakers also reported more positive healthcare experiences than Black and Hispanic participants.
Discussion: The study underscores the complex, intersectional nature of diabetes-related healthcare disparities and highlights challenges for minority and non-native English-speaking populations. Policy changes are recommended to improve healthcare accessibility and quality in these communities.
