Gender and Human Rights: Social Movements, Feminism, and Global Transformations

Tue, August 11, 12:00 to 1:30pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Paper Session (90 minute)

Description

The Human Rights Section seeks papers that explore the intersections of gender justice, human rights discourse, reproductive justice, and transnational activism in an era of profound social change, and feminist backlash. Drawing on diverse sociological perspectives, we are invested in papers with a range of methodologies that examine how feminist and queer movements from diverse geographic locations negotiate power, representation, and resistance within global frameworks of rights and development. We hope this collection highlights both the possibilities and contradictions inherent in translating local struggles into universal rights claims, revealing tensions between cultural specificity and global advocacy. By tracing the networks that connect grassroots mobilizations, digital activism, and institutional reform, we aim to have this panel interrogate how gendered inequalities are contested and reimagined across borders (including institutional, like the UN). Ultimately, we seek to advance an important discussion of how gender and human rights intersect as dynamic sites of political practice, solidarity, and transformation in a critical time of human rights.
