Session Submission Type: Paper Session (90 minute)
This panel will explore innovative and sustainable strategies by civil society actors in the Global South to enhance community welfare and societal well-being, independent of foreign aid. By highlighting successful case studies and discussing the challenges and opportunities faced, this panel aims to provide valuable insights into alternative development models that prioritize local empowerment and self-sufficiency. The panel seeks to explore diverse models of resource mobilization—including membership fees, social enterprise, local philanthropy, state assistance, mutual aid societies, and South-South cooperation networks—that civil society initiatives utilize to reduce reliance on external aid.
Submissions are invited on a wide range of development topics, including transnational efforts (specifically, those emanating from the Global South) at the local, state, and national level aimed at alleviating social and economic deprivation (including education and healthcare), advancing the social and political rights of women and disadvantaged minorities, safeguarding the environment (through addressing climate change mitigation and sustainable resource management), and improving governance structures.
