Session Submission Type: Workshop
Among First Generation/Working Class (FGWC) sociologists, families—parents, siblings, and extended family—are often discussed for both their assets (e.g. resilience, closeness) and the challenges they often present (e.g., financial need, difficulty in understanding the value of sociology or sociologists’ careers). As FGWC sociologists navigate their careers, navigating family often becomes necessary, derailing careers or relationships without adequate support. Navigating family is necessary for success, but there are few resources for how to succeed. This interactive workshop will connect what is known about FGWC families and careers to strategies for success. Participants should walk away with increased connections with fellow sociologists and increased confidence in their ability to navigate their families and succeed in their career. All are welcome to join, no matter their FGWC status or stage in their career.
