Session Submission Type: Workshop
Ujimaa Medics (UMedics), is a Black health collective that promotes emergency first response and community care to build self-determination, resilience and long-term wellness in our neighborhoods. Based in Chicago and suburban Cook County, UMedics has reached well over 2,000 people with our gunshot first aid, asthma, COVID-19, protest defense, diabetes, and seizure community care workshops mainly in the Chicago area, in addition to Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Seattle. We center the experiences of Black people and bring our skill shares to people in their movement organizations, places of worship, schools, blocks, living rooms, barbershops, workplaces, online, and any other place we're requested to come to.
In our session at ASALH, the organization’s Co-Founder/Executive Director and Training Coordinator will preview sections of our Basic Gunshot First Response, Asthma Community Care, and Protest Defense workshops, and then lead a Q & A and participant discussion about how community care response can help address some of the public health and safety challenges they face in their home communities.
Session will be recorded.
