A 20th Century Return-to-Africa via Galveston’s (Missing) Commemorative Markers (in-person)

Fri, Sep 22, 10:00 to 11:40am EDT (10:00 to 11:40am EDT), Jacksonville Hyatt Riverfront Hotel, Floor: 2nd Floor, Grand Ballroom Pre-function Area 2nd Floor

Abstract

More than 200 Historical Markers dot the Galveston Island landscape, but none indicate spaces used by Black Oklahoman emigrants during the 20th century’s only successful “Return-to-Africa” Movement. This poster highlights the gaps in additional scholarship utilizing existing sources could contribute to the Commemorative Landscape and further historical inquiry about Black-Led Returns-to-Africa.
