The Moral Economy of Dutch Crips

Wed, Nov 19, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Sierra B, 5th Floor

Abstract

This presentation will focus on the social embeddedness of more than thirty members and former members of the E/S Rollin 200 Main Triad Neighborhood Crips. Heavily influenced by the Los Angeles based Crips gangs, these Dutch Crips have been residing in a local neighborhood in The Hague for nearly 25 years. Based on three years of fieldwork among (former) members of these Dutch Crips, the contours of the moral economy of ‘h200dsta life’ will be presented. The focus will be on roles and power differentials within this social network and ideas and expectations about loyalty, norms of reciprocity, subsistence ethic and justice. Specific attention will be given to the so called ‘weapons of the weak’ in the form of (silent) protest, rebellion and other acts of resistance exhibited by members of this Dutch gang.
