Salvia divinorum is a potent, naturally occurring hallucinogen traditionally used in religious and healing ceremonies. Salvia is now used recreationally across the United States for its hallucinogenic properties and has recently been subject to legislation deeming its use illegal in many states. Currently, there is limited research on the salvia-induced experience even with policies taking effect to ban the substance. Based on qualitative interviews of 60 users across four US states, this study analyzes the salvia experience, identifies common themes found amongst users, and provides insight into the relatively unexplored high. These data suggest that the salvia-induced experience is greatly affected by purpose for use, dosage, and where and with whom salvia was used. Implications for policy conclude this paper.
