Love, Betrayal and Violence: An Examination of Domestic Violence in Country Music

Abstract

This paper examines the representation of domestic violence in country music. Using a content analysis of song lyrics, we will investigate how country music promotes violence against women. Song lyrics will be analyzed with respect to whether women are presented as the victims of domestic violence and/or objectified in ways that perpetuate violent behavior. The implications of listening to country music depicting violence against women will be discussed.
