Police-Directed Problem Solving: Providence, RI's BCJI Initiative

Thu, Nov 17, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom A, 1st Level

Abstract

The City of Providence, RI was a 2013 recipient of the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grant (BCJI). This project represents a multi-disciplinary effort to reduce the prevalence of crime and disorder in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence. Using a traditional problem-solving approach that included a strong community outreach component, the project team has focused crime reduction efforts on prostitution, open-air drug markets, and disorderly behavior among neighborhood youth. The current research will provide an overview of core findings of the community outreach process, innovative strategies employed to address these issues, and preliminary findings from the outcome evaluation. Policy implications will be discussed.
