Armed and Vulnerable or Armed and Defensive? Applying GST to LGBQ/SSB School Weapon Carrying

Wed, Nov 16, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Port, Riverside Complex

Abstract

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning (LGBQ) and same-sex behavior involved (SSB) youth are at higher risk for school victimization and school weapon carrying compared to their heterosexual peers. Yet, few studies have investigated the interrelated experiences of victimization and weapon carrying for LGBQ/SSB youth, and even fewer studies have attempted to theoretically understand the unique relationships between sexual identity and behavior, victimization, and weapon carrying for this population. Using an intersectional approach to General Strain Theory, data from a statewide probability sample of Delaware heterosexual (n=7,633), LGBQ (n=484), and SSB (n=55) youth in grades 9-12 are used to show that factors associated with weapon carrying, including victimization and isolation, differ for LGBQ/SSB and heterosexual youth. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed.
