The Summative Experience: An Examination of Seminars, Independent Studies, and Internships in the Criminal Justice Curriculum

Abstract

This paper compares and contrasts three different curricular methods for delivering a summative experience in the criminal justice curriculum. Identification of strengths and weaknesses for each curricular method are presented from the student perspective and the instructor perspective. The opportunity for students to apply course based and theoretical material in each of these modalities is specifically examined. The utility each method offers in affording the student a summative curricular experience which prepares them for post graduate employment or graduate school is also addressed. Findings are presented to inform pedagogical advances in delivering a summative experience in the criminal justice curriculum.
