Travel Restrictions for Registered Sex Offenders Across the United States

Abstract

The current paper examines an overlooked collateral consequence of registration requirements for registered sex offenders, which is traveling from their registration state to another state for business or pleasure. The authors obtained these requirements from each state’s Sex Offender Registration and Notification office. The findings indicate that the requirements for RSOs while traveling varies and can be complex for them to navigate through. These requirements range from the number of days the RSOs has before they need to register to submitting DNA. Some states or jurisdiction also require RSOs to adhere to residence restriction laws. Nonetheless, the collateral consequences of RSOs visiting another state may be difficult for them to overcome. Further findings and policies will be discussed.
