Psychometric Properties of a Screening Tool to Detect Elder Abuse and Neglect by Emergency Medical Technicians

Fri, Nov 18, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 9, 1st Level

Abstract

Elder abuse and neglect are highly under-reported in the United States. This may be partially attributed to low incidence of detecting and reporting among emergency medical technicians’ (EMTs), despite state-mandated reporting of suspected elder abuse. Innovative solutions are needed to address this under-detection. To streamline case identification and reporting to Adult Protective Services (APS), we are currently developing a screening tool for use by emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Data for this study were obtained from a pilot test of potential screening tool items developed from focus groups. During the pilot test, EMTs were instructed to complete the electronic screening tool when responding to calls involving adults over the age of 65 (excluding nursing homes). APS data were used to identify whether abuse or neglect was confirmed after reporting was indicated on screening tool item(s). These data were used to identify which specific screening tool items best predict confirmed cases of abuse or neglect. In this presentation, we will describe the psychometric properties of a preliminary screening tool. Specifically, we will present data on the validly of specific items as predictors of APS-substantiated elder abuse and neglect cases.
