The Language of Rape: Terminology in Online Media Coverage of NHL Sexual Assault Allegations

Abstract

In 2015, two National Hockey League players (Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Kane and Buffalo Sabre Evander Kane) were accused of sexual assaults in Buffalo, New York. While the cases are distinct, separate accusations they also share several commonalities. Both complainants met the players at local bars and later returned home with the men following a night of drinking. This exploratory, qualitative content analysis examines online media coverage and narrative of these cases. This includes a narrative analysis of trials by media through an examination of language and framing, as well as an exploration of how these narratives can impact public perception, reproduce rape supportive beliefs, and shift responsibility in these cases. Further, the links between power dynamics and language are explored with respect to the issues of masculinity, rape myths, and sports culture. Finally, a comparison of language use in sports versus traditional news media sources is provided.
