Sat, Nov 19, 8:00 to 9:20am, Hilton, Grand Salon 21, 1st Level

Abstract

Using data gathered from 300 college students, this study examines sexual victimization of college students in public transport system in New York City. Its purpose is to identify both informal (routine precautions) and formal safety measures (reporting to police, designing effective and appropriate opportunity-reduction measures) for preventing sexual victimization in urban setting. It is hoped that the study findings will generate a dialogue between, the campus authorities, students and the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) to address security needs of students. Future research needs are also discussed.
