Adoption and Implementation of Bystander Programs for Violence Prevention on College Campuses (McBEE)

Abstract

As mandated by the 2013 Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, bystander programs to reduce sexual and intimate partner violence are being adopted in college communities throughout the United States. However, little is currently known about how bystander programs are selected, implemented and experienced by staff and students. In our CDC funded U01, Multi-College Bystander Efficacy Evaluation, we seek to evaluate the relative efficacy and cost of bystander programs at multiple college campuses. We will present our qualitative and mixed methods strategies as a critical first step in achieving our overall goal. Key informant interviews with various campus staff, document and website analysis of campus programming, and follow-up electronic surveys will be carried out at multiple colleges over the four year study period. This method and source data triangulation will determine 1) campus decision-making processes for the adoption of bystander programs, 2) program implementation, dose and fidelity over time and 3) specific bystander intervention components at each campus that will inform analyses measuring relative program efficacy and cost. These data are essential for thorough program evaluation, and will provide a more holistic picture of the links between bystander programming and rates of violence in college communities.
