The Impacts of Restrictive Housing

Abstract

This paper discusses what we know about the impacts of restrictive housing. To this end, it first describes the known or potential impacts of restrictive housing on inmates, officers, and prison systems. Second, it describes conceptual and methodological challenges involved in evaluating the impact of this housing. Third, it identifies critical next steps necessary to advance restrictive housing research, policy, and practice.
