Children of Incarcerated Parents: Neighborhood Effects

Thu, Nov 17, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Grand Salon 16, 1st Level

Abstract

While researchers have begun to unpack how children of incarcerated parents are influenced by individual- and family-level characteristics, less is known about how the effect of parental incarceration might be influenced by community-level factors. Given research highlighting community effects on criminal offending, child development, and informal social support, this leaves a notable gap in parental incarceration literature. This article extends research on the collateral consequences of mass incarceration by examining how one's community may mediate or moderate the effect of parental incarceration on children and families.
