Thu, Nov 17, 6:00 to 7:00pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom A, 1st Level

Abstract

With the increase of attention to preventing domestic violence, the focus has been on spousal abuse while child abuse has fallen a bit through the cracks. While it is known that child abuse happens, the factors of surrounding the parents who abuse their children have not been thoroughly explored. The focus intent of this research is to examine potential difference in the characteristics of the households with children who experience child abuse. The project will look at characteristics such as if the household has one parent or two parents, what the financial situation of the household is, and how far the parent(s) got in their education. The study will use The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to look at the characteristics. This exploratory research will use a series of tests to compare these different characteristics that could explain factors in child abuse.
