A National Scan of Best Practices in Reentry for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

Abstract

To inform development of Juvenile Justice Reentry Standards, PbS conducted a scan of state juvenile justice agencies and local reentry organizations to understand what practices and services are currently being used, to what degree the practices and services align with research and where there are gaps in what research indicates are best reentry practices. The purpose of the scan was twofold:
• To collect a baseline of information about existing reentry practices and services; and
• To provide a framework for translating the literature review findings into national best practice measurement standards that are grounded in research and feasible for implementation across the country.
PbS developed a framework of youth-level and system-level domains to conduct a systematic, far-reaching approach to scan the field from the point when a youth is placed in a residential facility or program to when he or she is in the community on post-release supervision.
