Zero Tolerance Policing or Community Policing

Thu, Nov 16, 6:00 to 7:00pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor

Abstract

Zero-tolerance policing (ZTP), developed from broken windows theory, holds that minor crime and other signs of social disorder when ignored will escalate. Community policing/problem-oriented approaches aim to collaborate and engage. Both are proactive and reject reactive/watchman style.
Crime can be reduced - as we have seen in New York City and Los Angeles- but where do we go from here in Chicago, Ferguson, and other high crime areas in the USA? This poster will address ZTP in New York and LA, Community Policing in Chicago, and Trump Administration and Obama Administration initiatives. Will problem-oriented policing going forward mean greater collaboration with the community or will it focus on policing strategies such as hot-spot policing? And what about prevention, deterrence, and racial profiling, what direction can we expect? What are the initiatives of the Justice Department of Attorney General Sessions concerning consent decrees, racial profiling, gangs, and the wars on drugs and crime concerning prevention, suppression, and reintegration?
