Crime Data Warehouses and the Future of Big Data in Criminology

Abstract

The expansion of data availability is impact our world along many dimensions. This data availability, referred to as big data, has been made present in criminology through the use of social media data, but also through the increased availability of large criminal justice data sets, namely from policing agencies. Such data sets, at times, require computing beyond that of the typical desktop. In this presentation I will discuss the general nature of the data sets held at the Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies and the computing system used to manipulate these data. Additionally, I will discuss potential ways such data may impact criminology, moving beyond simply having larger sample sizes.
