College Student Conduct Violations: Examining the Prevalence and Sanctions for Student Drug and Alcohol Violations

Wed, Nov 15, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Room 410, 4th Floor

Abstract

A large body of research exists that examines the prevalence of drinking and drug use among college students. This research consistently finds that these behaviors are problematic and common among this population. Additionally, these behaviors can lead to further problems in a student’s academic and personal life. The current research utilizes several years of student conduct data to explore trends in violations, demographics of offenders, and the types of sanctions used to address violations. The potential effectiveness of different sanctions and the overall trends in student drug and alcohol violations will be discussed along with potential implications for policy and future program implementation for colleges and universities.
